GOVERNMENT DETERMINED TO TAKE ACTION ON PLAQUES
Posted: 17-03-2008

Gordon Brown has stated that he is determined to take some action in relation to compensation for Pleural Plaques. In answer to a Parliamentary Question on 12/3/2008 he said the Government will be publishing a consultation document very soon and he has agreed to meet a delegation of MPs to discuss the matter further.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice also said,

"People who fear they have been exposed to dangerous substances like asbestos, or who have been told they have pleural plaques, are bound to experience anxiety. So we take this issue, and the concerns that people have expressed about the recent House of Lords judgment, very seriously indeed. We are listening carefully to representations about this matter and actively exploring how people who have been exposed to asbestos and have pleural plaques, might be supported."

There has been press speculation the Ministers will shortly be announcing a deal which will see insurance companies agreeing to pay around £5,000 in compensation to individual plaques sufferers.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will keep clients advised of developments.
